John Hadley & Company is a multidisciplinary design engineering company which bears the name of one of England's most respected canal engineers. The company maintains its link with Britain's industrial past through the design of perhaps the finest bespoke English narrow and widebeam boats - whether live-aboard, long-distance cruisers or day boats. See our new long distance cruiser by following this link to our Narrowboat XENIA.

John Hadley & Company offers a complete design service to its customers, providing an innovative solution to design engineering projects by setting the direction of the design effort and managing the design programme from inception to completion. The project designer works closely with the client to develop the design concept and specification for final approval by the client. The project designer will then direct the design effort from that point with input from appropriate sub-contractors and specialist suppliers, reporting progress to the client at frequent and regular intervals. All our project designers are registered with the Chartered Society of Designers.

Concept

The design engineer will direct a team of designers to develop the concept and to create the drawings necessary to fully illustrate the design to the client.

With our commitment to Computer Aided Design (CAD) and solid modelling software, the design engineer may create the drawings him or herself.

Specification

The next responsibility of the design engineer is the detailed specification.

Working specifications, equipment demonstrations, samples of materials and finishes, are all discussed with the client. Very quickly, a full picture of the detailed design is built up for final sign-off by the client.

Production

Once the specification is finalized the design can be put into production.

Perhaps at no point is the designer more important than now. The design engineer, working with a team of specialist suppliers and the principal manufacturer will oversee the transformation of the design into reality.
